EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY
Issue of corruption in Nigeria has been a major concern to all and sundry in the society. The upsurge of this social menace in Nigeria in recent times is disturbing and it seems the menace has defied all kinds of treatment and the damage it has caused to national life cannot be quantified. Conequently, reflective of the manifestations of corruption in the political, social, administrative and economic life of the Nigeria state is the decaying infrastructure, inadequate medical services, falling standard of education, neglect of the basic/ fundamental needs of the people, loss of resources (human and material).Overtime, policing in the country has developed and changed, but corruption within its system has continued virtually unabated and largely unchanged in form and format. Rather, it has merely adjusted and adapted to developments in the Nigerian society. On a weekly or even daily basis, the Nigerian media is awash with reports of one act of corruption or other illegality perpetrated by the police somewhere in the country.
Findings of the study revealed some of the causes of corruption and criminal act such as Weak institution of government, Lukewarm attitude of the enforcers of the law, Excessive Materialism, Bureaucratic Bottleneck, Poor remuneration. Further result of the analysis and interpretation revealed that bureaucracy has too much innovation and not rigidity, it sees human feelings and not regarding human as a programme like machines and appropriately manipulated to produce standard outcomes in Nigeria. It was also discovered that rules and regulation encourage the operation of the Nigerian police.
